John Sanders
Honouring the life and legacy of the first Indigenous ordained Anglican minister in northern Ontario
John Sanders was born on March 17, 1845 at Fort Mattagami (near present-day Gogama, Ontario) to an Ojibwe mother and a father who worked for the Hudson’s Bay Company.
He grew up speaking Ojibwe, and later learned English and Cree — preparing him uniquely to serve as a cultural and spiritual bridge. [Source]
