Public Works Worker

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Public Works Worker performs various duties relating to the maintenance, operation and infrastructure of Brunswick House First Nation’s community buildings, snow removal, streetlights, and street signs, roads within the Nation’s limits, storm sewer and water system.

Public Works will help supervisor water and roads staff, supervise maintenance work by contractors; supervise the collection and disposal of solid waste; keep an inventory of materials required for community maintenance work; makes verbal an written reports to Executive Director and/or Chief and Council, membership and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada.

Duties & Responsibilities

    • Directs and supports the workers/laborers under their responsibility, in their planning, of their waste removal duties, and maintenance / repairs of band owned buildings, road, sewer, landscaping, parks, / other areas of sporting and recreational activities, repairs to machinery and equipment etc.
    • With the Director of Finance manages and develops the annual and monthly budgets for infrastructure, operation and maintenance services.
    • To supervise and oversee the day-to-day operation and short and long term scheduling of all projects and services of the Public Works Department.
    • Works in cooperation with Chief and Council in applying any strategic long/short term planning.
    • Submits requisitions, and can approve project acquisitions (job cost approval already obtained) requisition for payments, and requirements of the contract. (Materials, equipment, etc.).

Qualifications

    • Post-Secondary, Public Administration, Business Management or related field, plus three (3) years’ work experience in public works
    • Knowledge of AccPac, budgeting principles, ability to read a General Ledger (GL) listing, and manage other financial information including variance reports.
    • Computer skills and able to manipulate its software (Microsoft Office, Outlook).
    • Excellent written, reading, and comprehension skills.
    • Familiar with Federal and Provincial Funding.
    • Be effective, respected and respectful representative of the best interests of BHFN internal and external dealings.
    • A valid class “G” driver’s license is required
