Law Officer

Full-Time

Reporting to the Executive Director, the By-Law Officer enforces local bylaws and participates in Band Council Resolutions, ensures public safety, provides community education, and collaborates with other departments to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

    • Enforces bylaws and Band Council Resolutions, including land use, animal control, and public safety regulations
    • Responds to complaints and inquiries from residents, guests, and visitors, investigating alleged by-law violations and working toward voluntary compliance
    • Issue warnings, violation tickets, or summonses, and follow up to ensure compliance
    • Conduct inspections and patrols within the community to monitor adherence to regulations and provide a visible presence of enforcement
    • Educate Brunswick House First Nation community members about bylaws, public safety, and environmental or animal control programs through workshops, informational materials, or meetings
    • Collaboration with other department to provide a proactive approach to community well-being and coordinated solutions. Maintaining records and reports documenting calls and enforcement actions

Qualifications

    • Diploma or degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, police foundations, or community justice administration preferred; position acceptance Grade 12 with relevant experience in acceptance with Chief and Council
    • Background in by-law enforcement, policing, security, or regulatory compliance is high valued but not mandatory. Knowledge of Indigenous culture and community traditions is an asset
    • Excellent in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, report writing, and computer knowledge.
    • Valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the ability to work irregular hours, evenings, weekends, and on-call as needed. Ability to provide a clear criminal record and vulnerable sector check is mandatory
